Is there anything more aggravating then laying in bed at night and hearing the buzz of a mosquito in the room? It just kills me. Well, you can turn on the lights and hunt for the bugger all night, but there is a better step. Prevent mosquitoes from living around your home.
It is the rare person that likes mosquitoes. All living things play a role in nature, but even the Dali Lama has mentioned he could do without mosquitoes. When you think of the potential diseases they transport, it is hard not to agree. A short list includes malaria, West Nile Virus, Encephalitis and Dengue Fever. And that is a very short list.
An ounce of prevention is worth its weight in gold when it comes to mosquitoes. An ounce is the right measurement as well as mosquitoes are highly dependent upon water. Where pools of water are sitting stagnant, you’ll find a happy mosquito home. Mosquitoes must have such water to breed. Stop them from breeding and you are well on your way to a mosquito-less world.
If mosquitoes need water, it should be noted they do not need much of it. While a pond is nice, a bucket with water at the bottom will do well. So will a planter that has a water catch on the bottom. The inside of caps left on the ground can do the trick as well. If you use sprinklers, look around for pooling areas under plants. The same goes for any leaky pipes. Once you find the standing water, what do you do? It is incredibly complex…you dump the water out. That is it. Without pools of water, the mosquitoes cannot breed, so a quick dump does the trick. You should then walk around and make sure all water holding areas are dealt with.
Should you then spray mosquito killer in these areas that had water? Well, you can, but it is often unwise and unnecessary. The mosquito killer is often very harsh and can be bad for your pets and you. If you get rid of water, it should do the trick by itself and you don’t have to worry about your pet getting sick. If you hate mosquitoes, fight back. Get rid of stagnant water and you will deprive them of their breeding grounds. Without breeding, they will die off and you can get a peaceful night of sleep.
